Dead to Rights: Chapter Twenty-seven

Sarge showed up at the Resolute offices at ten the next morning to join Jamie, Jack, Dai, and Joey in the conference room. He looked rested and happy as he poured himself a cup of coffee and selected a cup of fruit from the buffet set out on the table.

“Thank you for agreeing to meet with me. I’ve got some big news, and I’m hoping you will let me say my piece before you start asking questions,” Sarge said.

“Go for it, Sarge,” Joey said as he sat down next to Dai with his own coffee.

“I’ve got to say, I’m curious as to what’s going on. Both Shane and Aidan hinted at a surprise, but wouldn’t spill, so get to it, please?” Jamie said.

Sarge laughed and leaned back in the chair. “I’ve accepted the position of Police Commissioner for the city of Harbor, Massachusetts. The announcement will be made tomorrow.”

“So much for retirement, huh?” Joey said.

“Congrats, Sarge…er…Commissioner. That’s wonderful,” Jack added.

Sarge held up a hand. “Please. So, with that, I had the opportunity to make some changes. I’m restructuring the departments and as of tomorrow, Aidan Haggerty will be the Chief of Detectives, with no hierarchy between him and the detectives under his command. He will report directly to me. I’m streamlining a lot and cutting out a bunch of the bureaucracy so there’s less chance of things getting shoved under the rug. With that said, I’d like to invite the three of you that were once my detectives, back to the precinct. Full reinstatement with a pay raise if you agree.”

Joey turned to Dai, and Dai said, “If it’s what you want, do it. Or we can just agree to being a consulting firm when the new Comish needs us.”

“I like what we’re doing, but I’d like to help the department when we can,” Joey said.

Jack looked over at Jamie, then to Joey. “Would you be upset if we went back to policing? You really gave us a chance here, but I have to say, I really miss being a cop.”

“Upset? No. We’re family. Besides, if Haggerty is Chief of D’s – wait, what about Jones? Anyway, if they’re not out there, then we’ll need you two to be our cop connection,” Joey said.

“Janna Jones is going to retire and go to law school. I won’t spoil their surprise by saying more, so talk to them,” Sarge said.

Jamie sat there and listened to everyone before he turned to Jack. “I’m with you. We’re partners, and if that means we get to be detectives again, then I’m in, one hundred percent.”

“Great. I was hoping for at least this,” Sarge said. “Now, before we make it public that you’re back on the force, I’d like to have you work out of here for a bit longer while you investigate some of the members of the department. I don’t think we got rid of all of the bad apples, and while some of them took themselves off the board, I believe there are still a few lurking.
